A Monkey Pod is the top portion of the Mini Monkey Pot - it is derived from the Lecythis elliptica, a large produce tree native to the Amazon rainforest and closely related to the tree that makes Ourico Pods.
The monkey pods provide visual interest in terrariums and aquariums as well as serving various functional functions in them, such as:
Deposit site for dart frog tadpoles/water holes
Food dishes
Naturalistic hide for small invertebrates, amphibians and geckos
Etc.
The Monkey Pod averages 1-2″ in diameter. However, due to the nature of this product there will be natural variation in size and color of each pod.
Aquarium Preparation:
It is recommended to boil Monkey Pods in an aquarium for at least an hour to remove any unwanted tannins. But who doesn't love Tannins! Put the boiled nut in a separate bin of water for a day before adding it to your aquarium to ensure the water quality will not be affected. This will also help the nut sink.
