Gumballs make for a whimsical addition to your leaf litter base. They have a very unique appeal to them while providing all the same benefits of your more common botanicals.  They originate from the Southern United States and are grown organically and sun dried.  They take a little while to sink but a quick boil can aid in the process.  Once sunk they provide great biofilm for fry and shrimp to graze on.
